Competitive Spirit

Over the years, I have prided myself on not being overly competitive. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy winning at cards or volleyball, but have never been a person to become obnoxious if I'm losing. Basically, I just like to play the game itself.

Now, in reality, this non-competitiveness does not apply to my relationship with my husband. I realized many years ago that I am EXTREMELY competitive against Bob. That competitiveness has now taken on a life of its own and it's because of priests. Yes, priests!

A couple times a year, I offer to do a series of weekend dinners for the Paulist priests who minister at our chapel. Over the years, we've come to know them and have, in some ways, also become friends.

Three weeks ago, I prepared a breaded salmon, a baked vegetable medly and a strawberry dessert. Unfortunately, Bob overheard one of the Paulists complimenting me on the dinner so he felt he had to do something really spectacular (notice this is a two-way street with competitiveness!). He prepared Coq Au Vin which took a full overnight to prepare!

Well...... this is now at the war stage between us! Not to be outdone, last Saturday I prepared tilapia topped with crab stuffing (drizzled with a mayonnaise/egg for the last five minutes), sesame seed green beans (with a soy sauce/miso paste glaze) and a raspberry, strawberry, blackberry parfait for dessert! (Take that, Robert!)
All the priests are taking great delight in this competition. In fact, they are more than willing to let Bob and I duke it out over their dinner table! In fact, one of them suggested a "Iron Chef" competition....
....it could get ugly in Grand Rapids soon! :-)
